About Aluminum · Myth—Aluminum doesn’t corrode. Untreated aluminum oxidizes which is by definition a form of corrosion. It takes an expensive process (i.e. powder coating or anodizing) to create a lasting adhesion. Although the oxidization layer does prevent further deterioration, aluminum does not provide the charm of a slightly rusted surface which could easily be touched up with a cheap can of spray paint is so desired.
· Fatigue life— “fatigue life” refers cyclical fluctuations and bending that eventually causes failure. Even if the fluctuations are so small that they don’t result in permanent deformation, the effects are cumulative. Nearly all materials have a fatigue life. Aluminum has a much lower fatigue life than wrought iron / steel. Gates are especially susceptible to fatigue because of opening and closing.
· Welding aluminum requires even more specialized equipment and processes than wrought iron. Which is why it’s only available as pre-fabricated panels attached by brackets which detract from appearance. |

The elegance of wrought iron fences and railings is perhaps only matched by it’s strength and longevity. Properly maintained, wrought iron will outlive all of us and our houses. Mind’s Eye Fabrication custom builds all fences and railings by welding together parts. There are many suppliers willing to ship pre-fabricated sections to you for installation. That may be a suitable alternative for your needs. However, pre-fabricated fences and rails will need to be attached using brackets and screws (often purchased separately). Besides detracting from the uniform look of welded wrought iron, screws require holes, and holes provide an entryway for water and humidity. Even if externally treated, the wrought iron can rust from the inside out. This means it won’t be detected until it’s too degraded to prevent or repair. |

Wrought iron fences, especially those with pointed finials, offer a better level of security and strength than wood. It’s much harder to scale. It’s much harder to force with brute strength. Whether the purpose of your fence is to prevent access to a pool or yard or simply for appearance, wrought iron is an excellent way to add value to your home.
